Are biological death and suffering the result of sin? Is the human soul immortal?
One of the mysteries pertaining to the development and the subsequent reception of ideas from patristic thought is the way in which the themes of death and the immortality of the soul were formulated. It is surprising how two essential ideas about humanity have worked their way into Christianity, to almost universal acceptance: 1) the soul is eternal through its own nature and it endures forever; 2) biological death is the result of the fall, with the understanding that if it had not sinned, humanity would have lived forever.
